True Grit

They say you have "true grit"
My first introduction to True Grit came with John Wayne. That was the first version I saw of the movie, and I have to say, before I saw it I was like, "It's John Wayne! Of course it's going to be good." I was wrong. It was the worst John Wayne movie I had ever seen. Stupid, annoying, and just kind of rude, True Grit was instilled in my mind as a bad movie. So it's no surprise that when I saw the advertisement for the 2011 remake of True Grit, I automatically figured it would be a no-go.
However, I still had a slightly open mind about it. I try to have an open mind about all movies, but I still keep it closed to filter out what shouldn't be considered a ."possible good movie". Despite that, though, True Grit was still at the back of my mind.
Then it came to the post theater, and, being only four dollars, I said, "What the heck. It's only four dollars."
With some friends and my sisters, we went and saw it. I was grasped into its plot the moment I saw the beginning.

"You must pay for everything in this world, one way or another. There is nothing free except the grace of God."

MY OPINION

This was a VERY good movie. I loved it to pieces. Very well made, very well acted, very well plotted. Mattie was hilarious, as was Rooster and LaBoeuf.

"No ma'am, I ain't supposed to utter your name!"

Hailee Steinfeld (Mattie) did an AMAZING acting job. There was nothing about her that wasn't perfection. Although she didn't win any of them, Hailee was nominated for like 10 Grammy Awards. Why she didn't win any, I haven't the slightest idea. She'll be a big time actress, just wait and see. ;)
There were great scenic images in True Grit as well.
I'd have to say that True Grit was the best movie I've seen in theaters this year. Yeah, it was that good. :)

SYNOPSES

Mattie sets out to find Tom Chaney, the man who killed her father for two pieces of gold. She hires a liquor-loving marshal, leaving everything behind and heading into Indian territory. Joining them is a Texas Ranger named LaBoeuf.

"We have no rodeo clowns in Yell County."

GOOD

I really loved the gradual daughter-father relationship between Mattie and Rooster. Mattie starts out as just a little girl, but in the end, Rooster puts his life on the line for her.
It was very nicely done; very sweet.

"And 'futile', Marshal Cogburn, 'pursuit would be futile'? It's not spelled f-u-d-e-l."

There was a lot of Biblical quotes in True Grit. The beginning quote: The wicked flee when none pursueth, was really awesome. I loved it. There's also an Old Testament tang to the rest of the movie.
And it was just an amazing movie, through and through. :)

NEGATIVE

It starts with a hanging. You see a mans fingers get cut off (the most graphic scene). People get shot. People get killed. It's a western, what do you expect? ;P

There is hardly any language in it, a few son of---, and supposedly there's an f-word somewhere in it. But I've seen it three times and have yet to catch it.

STARS: 5 out of 5

Matt Damon as LaBoeuf
